Did you know that over 90% of UK apples are never harvested for human consumption? When we heard this, it galvanised us to make a dent in this waste of healthy food by harvesting local apples last autumn and turning them into apple juice. As well as a shout out for donations, a team of volunteers picked apples from back gardens and in abandoned allotments, collecting over 600kg of fruit.
Working with local cider-maker Kernow Bevvies, we produced around 450 bottles of pure, pasteurised apple juice, which we sold at our Community Larders for £1 a bottle. This was so successful that we’re hoping to run something similar next year and we’ll be looking out for helpers nearer the time to help us source unwanted apples, harvest them and turn them into delicious juice.
